The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) is the operational branch of the UN that helps its partners carry out development, humanitarian, and peacebuilding initiatives successfully all over the world. By offering services that improve the efficacy, efficiency, and sustainability of peacekeeping, humanitarian, and development initiatives, UNOPS helps partners create a better future. UNOPS is tasked with serving as the UN’s major resource, offering a wide range of governments, donors, and UN agencies sustainable project management, procurement, and infrastructure services.
The Kenya Multi-Country Office, which is situated in Nairobi, Kenya, oversees an expanding portfolio of assignments. Currently, the KEMC sub-region is made up of an established Multi-Country Office in Nairobi, Kenya, which oversees a portfolio of engagements in several East and South African nations, including Tanzania’s mainland and the Zanzibar Islands, where UNOPS maintains a physical presence. The projects supported by the Sultanate of Oman’s Foreign Ministry include building a health center, renovating Bargash House, and setting up an educational facility on the island of Zanzibar. Building laboratories for secondary schools and renovating three agro-processing facilities in Morogoro, Zanzibar, and Dar Es Salaam are two more projects that have received funding from KOICA.
Currently, UNOPS is using funding from the Emirate of Oman’s Foreign Ministry to carry out projects in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Building the Istiqama Education College in Zanzibar is one of these initiatives. It is a school that welcomes pupils from all around the Zanzibar Islands. It is renowned for fostering students’ independence as well as their social, cultural, and economic integration into Zanzibari society. The fourth Sustainable Development Goal, “Ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all,” is directly impacted by this project. This initiative aims to improve the percentage of teachers qualified in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, which is in line with and contributes to the implementation of the Zanzibar Development Plan (ZADEP) 2021-2026.
